Osun election petition: why Oyetola should accept defeat

The Osun election petition has taken another twist. For at least five years now, Mr. Ademola Adeleke and Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola have dominated both the political arena and discourse in the southwest state. The Appeal Court has delivered its verdict.

The immediate past governor, Adegboyega Oyetola ought to accept defeat and should desist from further prolonging the Osun election petition. There is a need to let the matter be as clear indications show that he is not meant to take the seat.

But for the last minute efforts of the All Progressives Congress and its national leaders, Ademola Adeleke almost beat Adegboyega Oyetola in 2018. In fact the Osun election petition that time almost favoured him. Now is the time for Oyetola to let the matter lie.

The last general elections have shown where Osun people belong. They voted massively for the People’s Democratic Party while rejecting the All Progressives Congress. That should be an indication that the people wouldn’t want to have dealings with the APC anymore.

The Osun election petition has been dragging on. Mr. Oyetola initially argued that there were over voting in more than 700 polling units across the state. The tribunal agreed with him and deducted votes from the two sides.

Whereas the tribunal failed to consider the polling units where Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola had won. There were over voting in those areas as well. Upon a final analysis, Mr. Ademola Adeleke would still emerge by beating Oyetola. Then, there wouldn’t be any need to proceed with the Osun election petition matter.

The All Progressives Congress lost all the three senatorial district seats, all the nine House of Representatives seats and of course 25 out of the 26 seats at the Osun State House of Assembly. Adegboyega Oyetola would be in the midst of opposition.

Most of the time, the Supreme Court agrees with the decisions of the Appeal Court. The two seem to align with each other on lots of matters. In fact, the Supreme Court seldom dismisses the judgement of the lower court.

On the matter of the Osun election petition, there might be no difference at all. Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola lost at the tribunal that time, yet he went on to win at the Appeal Court and at the Supreme Court. Mr. Ademola Adeleke lost.
