Obi files case to seek Tinubu’s disqualification
The Labour Party candidate in the 2023 presidential election Peter Obi has filed a suit to challenge the political qualifications of Bola Tinubu, the winner of the poll.
Obi remains highly popular among youths and first time voters in the country. He enjoyed the support of unemployed and frustrated Nigerians.
The ex Anambra State governor came third behind the winner, Tinubu, and the first runner-up Atiku Abubakar. He now wants the electoral tribunal to decide on the qualifications of the APC candidate.
The Labour Party spokesman, Yunusa Tanko talked to Reuters. He said, “We are challenging the qualifications of the candidate that was declared the winner. We are also challenging the processes that led to his declaration as the winner, among others.”
There have been accusations and criticisms against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The commission had assured Nigerians that there would be electronic transmission of all results to its portal.
However, the commission failed to fulfill this and most of Peter Obi’s supporters claim that INEC manipulated the system. In fact, the Labour Party is challenging the processes that eventually produced the president-elect Tinubu.
International electoral observers have also blamed the electoral body for its improper handling of the processes. The European Union and the Commonwealth community criticised the commission for not following the due processes.
