Bola Tinubu’s victory: what can several protests change?

There are still lots of protests against Bola Tinubu’s victory in the poll. Aggrieved supporters of some candidates wouldn’t accept the results in good fate. They would rather undermine and drag the Independent National Electoral Commission in the dire.

The commission ensured that it followed all the procedures pertaining to the conduct of the election. And of course, it declared the winner who satisfied or fulfilled all the requirements under the electoral laws of the country.

Since Bola Tinubu’s victory became a reality, the aggressive and ultra violent supporters of the Labour Party candidate Peter Obi have used all media and fora to launch attacks and protests on the INEC and the winner himself.

The electoral commission couldn’t stop short of announcing a winner. The exercise was even credible going by the reports of the international observers. The democratic processes in the country are developing as against what the supporters want people to believe.

Bola Tinubu’s victory has also caused protests in as far as the United Kingdom. A number of Nigerians in the country gathered today to protest the step taken by the Prime Minister, Mr. Rishi Sunak to congratulate the president-elect. They carried placards with several inscriptions all to undermine INEC and reject the results.

The People’s Democratic Party also had a protest against Bola Tinubu’s victory: the party and some of its chieftains including Aminu Tambuwal, Iyorchia Ayu, Dino Melaye went to the INEC secretariat to register their rejection and grievances. What has changed exactly?

Nothing! The president elect is preparing for the task which he takes up in late May. The Independent National Electoral Commission can’t undo what it has done. It is not possible to even make the Commission go back in time. The matter now belongs to the court.

If the commission can’t do anything about it again, surely, those who protest do so in vain. It’s a futile attempt to claim power. The PDP supporters even put on black clothes. They claimed to be mourning. Who died? They said that democracy is dying in the country perhaps because they lost.

They ought to know what the constitution says. There are provisions for those who have genuine or otherwise agitations in the elections. That should have been the honourable path they should tread. Bola Tinubu’s victory may have come to stay unless the court says otherwise.
