Guber poll: The struggle for the soul of Lagos State

The struggle for the soul of Lagos continues on Saturday, 11 March during the guber poll in the commercial centre of the country. The richest state in the country is now between the old system and the new one that wants to oust the former.

The guber poll in the state has always been a walkover for the All Progressives Congress and its earlier predecessor, the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria. And since 2015 general elections, the All Progressives Congress has easily ridden to victory in the state.

Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu is seeking another term in office in the guber poll. He didn’t face a serious opposition during the last governorship election in the state. Otherwise is the case this time around as there is a serious threat to his ambition to lead the state for another four years.

He started feeling the heat when the results of the presidential election came out. It looked as if it’s not possible for Bola Tinubu to lose Lagos state. The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress trailed behind Mr. Peter Obi, who enjoyed supports from youths.

The movements that torpedoed Bola Tinubu in Lagos state is gaining momentum to launch themselves one more time in the guber poll. The objective is to totally hijack the state from the structure that the ex governor had built.

The Labour Party candidate has been able to appeal to the emotions or the sense of reasoning of the provoked youths. They were unable to push the candidacy of Peter Obi to victory, yet they have not relented as they hope to perform another magic in the guber poll.

The president-elect was 10,000 votes behind Peter Obi in Lagos state. Definitely, it were to be a guber poll, Tinubu would lose and the “Obidient movement” would laugh last. The last shot of the movement is about to be fired. Their next target to pull down is Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Gbadebo Rhodes Vivor has gained some widespread acceptability in Lagos state. He is the candidate of the Labour Party for the guber poll. Will the APC watch to lose the state for the second time in a row?

Everything is possible in politics and the tide of election can swing to any side. There is anxiety in the air. The pan Yoruba leaders feel the state is under a siege of Igbo extraction. Whereas the teeming youths, unemployed graduates are the siege.

On Saturday, it will be a clash of titans. Sanwo-Olu wouldn’t want to be the second Lagos state governor to lose reelection bid. Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode couldn’t serve for a second term due to internal matters in the All Progressives Congress.

The incumbent governor isn’t facing an internal aggression, which can be solved with ease. The struggle for Lagos state is real and it will fully manifest during the forthcoming guber poll on Saturday.
