Crisis brews in Rivers APC after victory
Barely one week after its unprecedented victory, crisis has started to brew in Rivers APC. The state chapter of the ruling party beat the Labour Party and the People’s Democratic Party (for the first time ever) in the presidential election.
The director of the Presidential Campaign Council of the APC in Rivers State, Mr. Tony Okocha has stirred the hornet’s nest. He has claimed that Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, an ex minister of transportation is no longer the leader of the Rivers APC.
Mr. Amaechi contested for the ticket of the All Progressives Congress, which Bola Tinubu eventually won last year. And since that time, the former Rivers State governor has distanced himself from the affairs and activities of the party in the state and the country at large.
Mr. Okocha alleged that the ex minister voted for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during the February 25 general elections. Atiku Abubakar represented the PDP as its candidate in the said general elections.
The Rivers APC coordinator for the election said Mr. Amaechi had long left the party. Amaechi has never addressed the press to announce his defection. Okocha further revealed that the ex minister became the party’s leader just because he’s in the Buhari’s cabinet.
Okocha stated, “a day to the presidential election, he ordered his supporters to go and vote for the presidential candidate of the PDP”.
He continued, “he himself, we have it on record that he voted for the candidate of the PDP, Atiku. That naturally disqualifies him as leader and that I, who won election with my own faction for our presidential candidate is now the leader of Rivers APC”.
Mr. Amaechi has not immediately responded to the claim made by the coordinator of Rivers APC. Crisis has always engulfed the state chapter of the party. It failed to present candidates for elections in 2015 and 2019 due to the unresolved internal matters of the party.
