EXCLUSIVE: How Igbo people have been voting wrongly since 2015

The pattern of voting of the Igbo people in the southeastern Nigeria can now be explicitly explained. The method seems to be full of hatred for other ethnic groups most especially the Yoruba and Hausa-Fulani.

Every Nigerian has rights to choose from a list of candidates for the presidential election. That’s the beauty of democracy. However, the Igbo people have made several wrong decisions since 2015.

While other parts of the country tilted towards the then candidate of the All Progressives Congress Muhammadu Buhari, the Igbo people still glued to the ex president Goodluck Jonathan. They didn’t see the change in tide of politics.

Out of inexplicable hate for the Hausa-Fulani, they preferred the then president to his resurging opponent Buhari. They voted, and Buhari won. Since that time, it has looked like the Igbo people are generally fighting or nursing hatred for the president himself.

The agitations for the establishment of the Biafra Republic gained more momentum. Since Jonathan lost, the Igbo people stepped up their calls for their own country. As the agitations continued, the 2019 general elections came in.

They could have used the opportunity to correct their political errors and identify themselves with the current leadership of the country. To make it more interesting, the People’s Democratic Party picked another Fulani man as its presidential candidate.

The Igbo people were between the devil and the deep blue sea. They had to make a choice at the crossroads. They thought Atiku Abubakar would a a fair or lesser devil. Hence, they cast their votes for him en masse.

What happened to the ex vice president? He lost the election to his kinsman from Katsina State. In fact, Mr. Atiku Abubakar could win only the eastern and south-south geopolitical zones of the country.

All of a sudden, the agitation for Biafra resumed afresh. Unknown gunmen launched attacks on security personnel and private individuals in the five states of the Igbo people. Security institutions suffered a great deal of loss.

When the Labour Party presented Mr. Peter Obi, there was a decline in the agitations and attacks. The Ndigbo quickly queued behind their “son” and bullied non Igbo people who refused to join the train. They wanted both Igbo presidency and a nation simultaneously.

Obi made his campaign. The elections held on 25 February, 2023 and the results clearly showed how the people from eastern region vote with bitterness, hatred. It’s only in southeastern region two parties didn’t win.

All of the All Progressives Congress, People’s Democratic Party and Labour Party won at least a state in southwest. The same thing happened in south-south geopolitical zone. And north central embraced all of the major contenders.

Whereas the Labour Party and its flag bearer Peter Obi took all the five states. The Igbo people didn’t pave way for the other parties to gain any ground let alone votes in their land.

Even conservative north also divided its votes. Bola Tinubu grabbed Zamfara and Jigawa in northwest, Rabiu Kwankwaso took Kano State in that same region. Both Tinubu and Atiku split Katsina State into two.

It’s even funnier to see results from the polling units in the southeastern region. Bola Tinubu recorded zero votes in most of those units. Does that mean the APC doesn’t have members or representatives in those areas?

The voting pattern of Igbo people is wrong. It makes the race to occupy the backseat. There is a need for reorientation at least for the interest of the people who feel they are sidelined.
