How do Bola Tinubu convince the radical southwest voters?
The candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, may find it tough to convince the radical voters who dominate the southwest geopolitical zone of the country.
The last time a Yoruba politician contested for the top seat in the country, he lost. Bola Tinubu may suffer from the same fate of Olusegun Obasanjo in the most anticipated general elections.
The margin between the winner and the first runner-up has always been very low. The electorate from that axis are serious and critical thinkers. They check their chances before casting their votes.
The southwest has always been a divided region of voters. That has been the pattern and they can’t be blamed for that. When you check the results of the previous elections, the marginal are low. The elections are often keenly contested.
However, this time around Bola Tinubu needs the overwhelming support of the millions of registered southwestern voters. How can he convince them with just few days to the election? It’s relatively impossible.
Mr. Peter Obi has been able to appeal to the emotions of a number of voters from the geopolitical zone. The christians, who feel it’s wrong to combine two Muslims as president and vice president. They feel threatened that there is possibility of changing the country to an Islamic one.
The radical southwest voters Bola Tinubu needs to convince are not swayed by the campaign that it’s Yoruba’s turn to lead the country. They will rather look out for capabilities of the candidates.
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo lost the region, will Bola Tinubu fall victim of it as well? Or he will win with a very low margin as it’s always happened? Or he will be able to convince the voters to overwhelmingly support him?
Traditional rulers, and sociocultural leaders have thrown their weights behind Bola Tinubu. Suffice to say, the southwest voters are not under the control of the leaders at all unlike the northerners.
