Tension as APC governors meet chairman today
There is an emergency meeting slated for 2pm today between the APC governors and the chairman of the party. The meeting holds amidst friction between the governors and the presidency.
The governors have dared the president, Muhammadu Buhari, over the new naira notes crisis that keeps rocking the country, and causing confusion from all angles of the country.
The president has shown his backup for the Central Bank of Nigeria, and its governor Godwin Emefiele over the redesigning of naira and banning of the old notes. Whereas this has not gone down well with the governors.
In particular, Mr. Nasir El-Rufai has become the most vocal among them. He has heavily criticized the president for disregarding the order of the Supreme Court and for his clear nonchalant attitude to the pleas of Nigerians.
Umar Ganduje from Kano State has openly said that the president, Muhammadu Buhari, is bent on crippling the All Progressives Congress (APC) before leaving power. All these must have made the national chairman summon the meeting.
Only yesterday 10 governors went to court again. Surprisingly, APC governors dominated the list. They were the ones who still feel agitated over the decision of the Federal Government and the apex bank of the country.
While the main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party and the Labour Party are quiet and moving on with their own campaigns for the polls, the APC feel the president is sabotaging their efforts.
Tensions are still in most of the state including Ondo, Lagos, Ogun, Delta, Edo among others. Protesters are blocking roads, setting fire on tyres and in fact attacking banks.
The policy of the CBN which the president has endorsed is considered as a calculated effort to disturb Bola Tinubu. Even the candidate himself has echoed the conspiracy theory.
There are more to expect from the emergency meeting at 2pm in Abuja. The APC governors will show their disapproval to the decision of the president and the meeting may not end well.
