Why APC can’t be blamed for naira scarcity

The All Progressives Congress (APC) can’t have blame for the naira scarcity that rocks the country. Millions of Nigerians and critics have accused the political party of bringing hardship upon the citizens.

President Muhammadu Buhari won the last two presidential elections on the platform of the APC. And since he has relationship with the party, and represents the ideology, Nigerians won’t stop at blaming the president alone. They have transferred their aggressions to the party.

The All Progressives Congress seems to have used several opportunities to distance itself from the policy. The Central Bank of Nigeria has said that it wouldn’t extend the deadline anymore. And it’s obviously ridiculed the ruling of the Supreme Court.

Nigerians have staged protests at major southern cities including Ibadan, Benin, Abeokuta and a host of others to show their annoyance. Yet on the internet and on social media, they blame the APC.

At this moment, only the APC governors have taken the bull by the horns. Mr. Nasir El-Rufai, Mr Yahaya Bello, And Mr. Bello Matawalle of Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara State respectively dragged the Buhari-led government and the CBN to court.

Even the governors of the People’s Democratic Party can’t muster courage to take on the government and the bank. The PDP even seems complicit in the whole matter.

Recall that Bola Tinubu had had an outburst in Ogun State. He accused the CBN governor Godwin Emefiele of working or conspiring with the PDP to foil his (Tinubu’s) bid for the office of the president of the country.

Do we then blame the same APC that has identified with the masses? Of course not. The presidential candidate, Tinubu, has been up and doing. He has talked tough both openly and in secret against the policy of the bank on the naira notes.

Some say that he criticized the policy because of the negative effects it has on his campaign and bid. This may be true. Yet the fact that Tinubu talks about it shows that he doesn’t join the government to make life uneasy for the poor and common people.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governors in Lagos and Ogun State are also taking steps. They have sent some warnings to the commercial banks over the old naira notes. Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Mr Dapo Abiodun don’t just condone what the presidency is doing.
