Real reason Atiku cancels Rivers campaigns
The ex vice president Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has finally cancelled his campaign Rivers State. The coordinator of the campaign commission in the state has given the update about the development.
It’s really shocking that the ex vice president wouldn’t campaign in a state which literally and traditionally belongs to the People’s Democratic Party. The party has been coasting home victory in the south-south state since 1999.
The coordinator said that the campaign has to be on suspension due to insecurity in the state. This is the same state that the All Progressives Congress has booked to hold its rally and talk to the voters.
What manner of insecurity can make Atiku Abubakar cancel Rivers campaigns? There have been no serious cases of kidnapping and banditry as it happens in northern states. In fact, the Niger Delta militants have ceased to carry out attacks on the state.
The main reason for the cancellation is the issue that Atiku Abubakar has with Mr. Nyesom Wike, the governor of the state. They both slug it out till now even though the primary election that caused the friction had long ended.
Mr. Wike lost the primary election to Atiku Abubakar. And things have fallen apart since that time and all efforts to calm frayed nerves have absolutely failed. He continues to smear the image of the candidate and openly campaigns against him.
The Presidential Campaign Council of the PDP had earlier sought to use the Yakubu Gowon stadium in Rivers State. Hurriedly, the government under Wike withdrew the approval.
In another surprising move, the same Wike-led government granted an approval to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to use at no cost. The APC doesn’t feel there is a need to worry about security in the state that PDP controls.
Atiku cancels Rivers campaigns not for any other reason but his protracted issue with Wike. The presidential campaign council may not want to disclose this so as not to rekindle the ember of fire in the party.
