Call me bastard if… Bola Tinubu

“Call me bastard if you spend more than eight years in the university”. That is the exact statement Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress candidate for the presidency, made.

Tinubu often talks without bridling his tongue in public. He seldom circumspects his expressions before he releases them and they do land in him trouble. His media team does struggle to clear his statements.

Bola Tinubu was in Osun State yesterday. And while he was talking to the people in a packed stadium, the candidate said he should be called a bastard if the students at home and in the school spend more than eight years in school.

Right now there is no particular course in Nigeria that requires eight years in the school. Only medical programmes take more periods of time, and the maximum duration is six years.

But Tinubu said they wouldn’t spend more than eight years. By implications, he meant that they might spend up to. Nigerian universities, and other tertiary institutions, have been shut for as long as a year in the past eight years.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has slugged it out with the Federal Government over the call for revitalisation of the university among other demands of the union.

The body doesn’t hesitate to down tools and subsequently force the students to go home. The students have had to endure several breaks in their programmes, which become elongated.

Perhaps Tinubu wanted to assure the students that he wouldn’t delay them if he wins the election and becomes the president. His critics have claimed that he is too old for the office and his health can’t cope with the demands of the top office.

Tinubu spoke in Yoruba language and said, “call me bastard if you stay more than eight years in school”.
