Adeleke’s loss at tribunal: an albatross for Atiku
Ademola Adeleke’s loss at the tribunal can be an albatross for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the next month’s presidential election. The decision of the 3-man panel was shocking. Ademola Adeleke seems to be a very popular figure and that he was truly elected by the people of the state.
Only two months and two days after he took over the government of Osun State, the tribunal came up with the order that the Independent National Electoral Commission withdraw the certificate of return from Adeleke and give it to Adegboyega Oyetola, who left power on 27 November, 2022.
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party would be looking forward to winning Osun State out of the six states in the southwest geopolitical zone. Bola Tinubu will most likely sweep the region.
The other state that could have been up for grab for Atiku Abubakar is Oyo State. But unfortunately, Atiku and Seyi Makinde are not on the same page. Hence, only Osun State is available for him in the Yoruba world.
Although Adeleke has resolved to approach the Court of Appeal over the verdict, before the appellate court sits and decides on the matter, the damage to Atiku’s chance in the state will have been so much.
The All Progressives Congress is already emboldened and the party will ride on the crest of the tribunal decision. Actually, it’s not that Tinubu is struggling in Osun State. The fact of the matter is that the defeat of the PDP at the court will further weaken Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Hence, Adeleke’s loss at tribunal is Atiku’s albatross.
The ex vice president didn’t leave Ademola Adeleke in the lurch as he did to the PDP’s candidate in Ekiti State. Atiku will be expecting to replicate the support in the general elections. With the loss at the tribunal, all hope may have been lost.
