What you need to know about INEC mock accreditation

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will soon conduct a mock accreditation ahead of the 2023 general elections. The INEC chairman, Prof Mahmud Yakoob, has revealed the plan of the body for the exercise.

He made the revelation in Chatman on Tuesday as part of the preparations for the election. The chairman said that the mock accreditation would take place on some selected polling units in all the 774 local government areas in the country.

The mock accreditation will help to test and ascertain the functionality of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BIVAS). The chairman said all the machines have been tested by experts and they are functioning well. However, the commission won’t take anything for granted.

Hence, the commission has decided to hold the exercise for certainty. According to Punch Newspaper, the INEC chairman said that backup machines are in place in case any of the deployed ones malfunctions in the course of the exercise.

BIVAS, as it is commonly called, has enabled INEC to rapidly improve in its conduct of the elections. The commission deployed the machines for the Osun and Ekiti State gubernatorial elections.

Mr. Mahmud Yakoob also revealed there is a technical support on ground to fix any error or fault that may arise when the machine is under use for the elections.

Lastly, if a particular machine fails to work after all efforts must have been made, there will be another election in such a polling unit within 24 hours.
