Uneasy calm as Osun tribunal reserves judgement
There’s an uneasy calm as Osun tribunal reserves judgement on the case brought before it by the All Progressives Congress and its governorship candidate Adegboyega Oyetola. The duo had approached the court to upturn the victory of Ademola Adeleke.
The three-man tribunal patiently listened to the final arguments of the two sides in the tussle. And it has now reserved its judgement for a later date.
Mr. Oyetola argued that he won the 16 July, 2022 election in which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the PDP’s candidate Ademola Adeleke as the winner. The ex governor, Oyetola, argued that there were irregularities in more than 700 units across the state.
The APC also faulted the credentials that Mr. Ademola Adeleke, who now governs the state, submitted as part of the requisites to contest for the job in the southwest state. Mr. Akin Olujinmi SAN, who represents the APC claimed that the testimonial Adeleke submitted contained Osun State whereas Osun State had not been formed when he said he got the document.
The chairman of the tribunal, Kume Tertsea made the pronouncement that the judgement has been reserved.
The two sides seem confident of victory. Adegboyega Oyetola has claimed he would get his “stolen” mandate while Mr. Ademola Adeleke said the will of the people of the state will be upheld by the court.
Political atmosphere is calm in the state; however, the two sides are nervous as neither knows what the decision of the tribunal will be.
Mr. Adeleke, who also slugged it out with Oyetola in 2018, was at the state house yesterday to appreciate president Muhammadu Buhari. Adeleke commended Buhari for the new electoral law and for his neutrality.
Buhari belongs to the ruling All Progressives Congress just as the plaintiff in the Osun tribunal case.
