There is still no respite for APC almost two years after Adams Oshiomhole exited as the national chairman of the party. He lost his job at the secretariat. Yet the party is in shambles.
The crisis looked almost solved when the National Executive Council decided to relieve Oshiomhole of his appointment. He bowed out of the office. And the NEC didn’t stop at that.
The powerful organ put a caretaker committee in place. The committee would be the albatross of the All Progressives Congress at this moment. The committee had one particular responsibility.
The NEC asked the caretaker committee to organise a convention. And a new National Working Committee would be in place. Almost two years later, the committee is yet to do the needful.
The former Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole, appeared to be the main headache of the APC then. There were calls from across the country to remove him. All crises in the party were attributed to him.
Of course, Adams Oshiomhole left. But rather than having a permanent relief in the party, numerous and more difficult issues are around the ruling political party.
Mai Mala Buni, the caretaker committee chairman and his committee would only compound problems for the party. The convention may not even hold this month. It has been put off on a number of occasions.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has written to the APC. The electoral umpire said it wouldn’t be in the APC NEC meeting. The INEC still recognizes Buni as the caretaker chairman.
Whereas the APC as silently or clandestinely sacked Mai Mala Buni. The Niger State governor, Abubakar Bello had taken over as the acting chairman.
It is crystal clear that the quagmire in the party would last longer. Some governors including Dapo Abiodun, Yahaya Bello have been linked to issues surrounding Mai Mala Buni and the APC. Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu called them “yahoo yahoo governors”.
There is an unverified report that Buhari had anointed or endorsed Mr. Abdullahi Adamu. The former Nassarawa State governor is among the aspirants for the chairman’s seat.
Yet his choice has not gone down well with the APC governors. They will rather choose another person. Even Mr. Tanko Al-Makura has said that he wouldn’t bow to the pressure. All this shows how disorganized the APC is.
Mr. Adams Oshiomhole’s departure ought to bring a lasting peace to the APC at the national level. But there is no respite for APC almost two years after he lost the coveted seat.
