Russia’s three demands from Ukraine are the main bones of contention in the conflict. Russian president, Vladimir Putin, ordered a “special military operation” in Ukraine more than a week ago.
The conflict, which has claimed several lives, has entered the second week. Yet there is no sigh it will abate. The Russian forces continue to launch missiles and attack military infrastructure of Ukraine.
The demands and objectives of Russia have been stipulated. The Russian president has some aims in the neighboring state. And he wants the Ukrainian side to comply.
Russia wants former Soviet state Ukraine to amend its constitution. Russia wants Ukraine to expunge the part of the constitution that allows joining blocs.
Ukraine has made concrete steps to join the military alliance of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Whereas Russia considers this as a serious threat to its core existence.
Russia fears the presence of NATO in Ukraine would further expose Moscow. Hence, Russia wants Ukraine to remove that part of the constitution.
The second demand is that Kyiv should recognize the independence of Crimea. The Russian forces annexed Crimea in 2014. Likewise, Russia has backed separatists in that region.
The Western allies frown at the Russian activities in Crimea. But the Kremlin wants Ukraine to recognize Crimea as independent. And that is a part of the demands.
The authorities in Kyiv have not responded to Russia’s three main demands. But Ukrainian President Zelensky recently appealed to the European Union to hasten up in its demand to join the bloc.
Rather than surrendering to Russia, more Ukrainians are taking up arms. Zelensky has said that his country won’t surrender to Moscow.
Russia has also warned that no country must declare no fly zone over Ukraine. The invading country argued that it would treat such a country as a participant.
