Russia loses again as war continues

Russia loses again in the United Nations. The General Assembly of the world organisation met on Wednesday. There was only one agendum on the list.

The General Assembly meeting became necessary so as to talk about conflict in Eastern Europe. Member states voted overwhelmingly to condemn and reprimand Russia. The former Soviet Union has invaded Ukraine.

The assembly demanded that Moscow should stop the fight. It also wanted Russia to withdraw its armies from Ukraine.

A total sum of 141 members voted to condemn belligerent Russia in the historic decision of the General Assembly. There were 193 members.

The crisis in the region has forced thousands of Ukrainians and other nationals in the country to vacate. Poland has opened its borders to allow them as refugees.

The text of the resolution of the assembly referred to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. And it will be the first time since 1982 that there would be an emergency meeting of the UNGA.

Russia itself vetoed the resolution of the United Nations Security Council over the matter. But the United Nations General Assembly’s decisions aren’t binding.

Countries like Eritrea, North Korea, Syria voted against the resolution of the assembly. And China along with other thirty five countries abstained.

The resolution of the United Nations General Assembly could be a subtle victory for Ukraine. The overwhelming support of the 141 countries was unprecedented.

The traditional ally of Russia, Serbia also voted to condemn Moscow. The Russia’s isolation continues even though Vladimir Putin hasn’t decided to withdraw.

Linda Thomas Greenfield, the USA ambassador to the United Nations talked tough about the decision of the Assembly.

She said, “This is an extraordinary moment,” she said. “Now, at more than any other point in recent history, the United Nations is being challenged.”

Just as Russia loses again in the crisis, the ambassador asked the world to hold Russia accountable for events in Ukraine.
