2023 Presidency: Will Atiku Enjoy Igbo Support Again?

0

The 2023 presidency is around the corner. Preparations have started fully. But one question that bothers minds of analysts is: will Atiku enjoy Igbo support again?

The Igbo people who occupied the southeast zone massively supported and voted for Mr. Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 general elections. He got the votes of all the five states in the southeastern region of the federation.

He picked the vice presidential candidate from the area and they paid him back in a great way. He contested for the presidency along with Mr. Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State.

Mr. Raymond Dokpesi, a very strong ally of Mr. Atiku Abubakar, has gone to some states in the southeast to canvas for support for the former vice president once again. He enjoined them to back the ex vice president.

He further told them that the northern region has not completed its tenure in the presidency. Hence, he said that Igbo politicians should wait a bit more. Will they listen to this argument?

Note that more and more Igbo politicians have taken the bull by its horns. They have shown interest and Mr. Peter Obi is also in the race. He doesn’t want to play the second fiddle anymore.

Actually, Peter Obi is the only Igbo politician to show interest in the PDP’s ticket. Mr. Orji Uzor Kalu, Mr. Dave Umahi, and Rochas Okorocha are struggling to get the APC ticket.

If Mr. Atiku Abubakar eventually gets the ticket of the People’s Democratic Party, will he be able to get or secure the unrelenting support of the Igbo people?

The Igbo people won’t want to scuttle their own chances once again. It was understandable that the Igbo people had to make a choice between Mr. Atiku Abubakar (PDP) and Mr. Muhammadu Buhari in 2019. They went for the former.

As the 2023 presidency is drawing closer, will Atiku Abubakar enjoy Igbo support again?

It is a matter of time to answer this question. And if it happens again, the Igbo people may be making a big mistake.
