36 Governors Reject N60,000 Minimum Wage

All the 36 Governors of the Federal Republic of Nigeria have rejected the N60,000 minimum payment being proposed by the federal government.

There have been debates and issues over the new “living” wage as the labour unions call it. They went on strike on Monday, 3 June and suspended it for five days after a deal with the government.

The federal government said that it was committed to “above” N60,000 as the new minimum wage and ordered the minister of finance Wale Edun to come up with the cost implications of the proposed salary.

However, the governors said that they wouldn’t be able to pay the said N60,000 which has not even been accepted by the workers.

The labour unions will most likely resume its strike if the government fails to come up with an acceptable living wage for the workers.
