You can know three particular things about the planned national APC convention. It is expected to hold next month barring all unforseen circumstances.
After so much delay, the National Executive Council and the APC governors agreed to hold the convention next month. But Nigerians should know three certain things.
Mr. Adams Oshiomhole remains the last elected chairman of the party. And whoever emerges in the convention will be taking over from him officially.
Oshiomhole, a former Edo State governor, lost his job when crisis engulfed the party in 2020. The NEC met to deliberate on his matter in June of that year.
After a thorough examination of events, the powerful NEC decided to dismiss him and appoint a caretaker committee.
Mr. Mai Mala Buni, the Yobe State governor, is the chairman of the committee. The caretaker committee initially had a period of six months to work. But it wasn’t enough.
The Buni-led caretaker committee has been working since June, 2020. Yet the convention didn’t hold. And the committee faces so many challenges including legal tussles, state chapters crisis and a host of others.
Lastly, the main contenders for the seat of APC national chairman are former governors. At least three or four former governors are in the race.
Mr. Tanko Al-Makura of Nassarawa State, Mr. George Akume, Mr. Ali Modu Sheriff are working to get the APC job.
Meanwhile, as the former governors are working to win the convention, incumbent governors are working on their interests to choose their protege.
