Three tertiary institutions have banned students from using private cars in the school premises. The schools have mandated their students to henceforth stop bringing cars into the campuses.
The Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, is the latest on the list of schools that frown at students’ bringing private vehicles into the premises.
The school has released a statement through the registrar of the polytechnic, Mrs. B. O. Dara. The statement is dated 29 January, 2022. And part of it asked the students to stop their cars at the gate.
The statement revealed that the school management had an emergency meeting and they deliberated on the use students’ use of vehicles by students.
The management also considered the flamboyancy of the students. So, “After thorough deliberation, management therefore directed that students are hereby banned from driving their vehicles into the campus.”
The decision came as there is a rapid increase in ritual killings among Nigerian students. Furthermore, scamming and fraud are on the rise. So, the management wants the students to wear their identity cards all time.
Close to one year ago, the authority of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, came up with the idea of banning students from bringing cars and power bikes into the campus.
A statement was released at that time in April, 2021. The registrar of the school, O. O. Fakorede signed the statement.
The management of Adeyemi College of Education gave reasons for the decision. It argued that both students and staff complained of the reckless abandon with which students drive on the campus.
Authorities of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, also announced banning students from driving in the school. The basis of the decision was security. Details were sketchy.
The tertiary institutions have stopped private cars owned by students from the campus.
